Steps to Finding Engagement Rings

Engagement rings represent an incredible promise to the one that you want to spend the rest of your life with. If you have finally decided to purchase an engagement ring for your girlfriend, there are many different options of rings and different cuts that you can buy that it can be extremely overwhelming. Just know that you are not alone; plenty of people have been and currently are in your position. A majority of people have no idea of the different types of rings that are available to them or why they are so expensive. A story may help give you a better idea of how to shop for engagement rings.

A friend recently was searching for an engagement ring for his girlfriend of three years. They had met their senior year at Penn State and both found jobs in the area to stay together. My friend, Greg, got a marketing job while his girlfriend, Jenna, got a job as a temp at an accounting firm. Greg started looking for the ring about two and a half years after they started dating. Greg had no idea of what type of ring he was looking for. He walked into a jewelry store and started basing his ring off of price. He wasn't the richest guy in the world, but he was a couple of years out of college and had saved a good amount of money for the ring.

Many people end up buying what is called a princess cut diamond ring. A princess cut ring is a solitaire diamond ring on the prongs. This could be, but is not limited to, surrounded with small diamonds around the band. It has been pretty much the jewel industry standard for the past decade. Greg ended up buying a princess cut diamond engagement ring. There is a rule of thumb to help a buyer find the right ring: the four C's. The four C's are cut, clarity, carat-weight, and color. Cut means what type of style the diamond is fashioned in to. This is where many people get confused because there are so many different cuts out there that to the naked eye might all look the same to someone who doesn't know what they are looking for. Clarity is how much light the diamond lets in and out. The more light a diamond capture the more expensive it will be. Carat-weight is how heavy the diamond is. Just because a diamond is big in size does not mean it will be expensive. It could have some blemishes and flaws, so make sure you get it checked out before purchasing. Finally, color is exactly what you'd think it would mean: the color of the diamond. Diamonds that contain color are not as popular as colorless diamonds. Again, colorless diamonds are the preferred choice because they let in the most amount of light, unlike diamonds with color. Diamonds with color is a good option for those investing in unique or antique engagement rings.
As you can see, engagement rings require you to put some thought into your purchase, not only because they are expensive, but because it is an everlasting promise to your wife. I'm sure whichever ring you decide on purchasing; it will be the most thought-out memorable rings ever.
